Anesthesia Free Dental Cleaning Remains Illegal in CA
Recently the AB-2304, known as the teeth scaler bill, failed to pass the Assembly Business and Professions Committee in California. This bill was an attempt to legalize the use of dental teeth scaler for non-veterinarians in anesthesia free dental cleaning.
The California Veterinary Medical Board states that performing anesthesia free dental cleaning is dangerous for several reasons. Dental tartar is firmly adhered to the surface of the teeth. Scaling to remove tartar is accomplished using ultrasonic and sonic power scalers, plus hand instruments that must have a sharp working edge to be used effectively. Even slight head movement by the patient could result in injury to the oral tissues of the patient, and the operator may be bitten when the patient reacts.
